We were listening to our Bari Koral station on Pandora today when Brent said to me, “I’m so excited for Bari’s new album to come out! When is that again?” “Why it’s Valentine’s Day, dear!” I replied. It’s a cheesey intro, I know. But it was a real conversation. So if you, like us, love Bari Koral, I thought I’d share her news with you.

We’ve loved Bari Koral since our first listen through of Rock and Roll Garden in 2009. We even had an interview with her on the release of Rock and Roll Garden in Jan 2010. Then we adored her first music video for The Backpack Song. We never tire of Bari Koral’s music. And so we’re really excited to receive an advance copy of her CD soon so we can share our review. To whet your appetite, here’s a sneak peak at her new album with the song Anna and the Cupcakes:

Anna and the Cupcakes

We can’t wait to hold the new album in our hands! Yeah, Bari Koral. You rock, girl!

I have been thoroughly enjoying The Redheaded Hostess‘s great ideas for scripture study and teaching the gospel to little ones. I even ordered her brand new scripture journals for myself for Christmas, but shhhh it’s a surprise! I was totally inspired by Shannon to create something for our Primary children to record what they learn each month. The Primary Sharing Time Journal is the product of that inspiration.

Primary Sharing Time Journal 2012As I’ve thought a lot about how Primary went this year with our focus on the Articles of Faith while the theme focused on the scriptures, I’ve been thinking what we can do for next year to build on that foundation. We’re planning on continuing to work on memorizing the Articles of Faith since it’s part of the Faith in God program. We did a reward system this year where they put scoops of beans in a large vase for every Article of Faith they memorized and passed off to their teacher. Once the vase is full then we have a party, about three a year. This coming year we’re going to focus on memorizing the scriptures that go with each month’s theme.

Primary Sharing Time JournalAlso, I know (fingers crossed) that we’ll be moving this summer for Brent’s rotations. Last summer our presidency changed in June and then we all went on vacations for the summer and we spent all fall scrambling to put together the sacrament program. I don’t want to leave the next presidency in the same mess we put ourselves in so I created a Primary Sharing Time Journal to help the kids remember what they learn each month about the theme. Hopefully their written record of what they learned can be used to prepare the sacrament program and make that process easier for a new presidency.

Primary Sharing Time JournalMy plan is that we will keep the journals all year handing them out once a month for the kids to update them and write what they’ve learned. Then in December we can give it to them as a gift and souvenir of their year in primary.

If you’re interested in using this with your children or primary, you can download the Primary Sharing Time Journal 2012 here.

Primary Sharing Time Journal 2012This is a free download. I created the journal in Illustrator; translation, with a lot of tears and some gnashing of teeth. Please use these journals for personal, church or noncommercial use only (please don’t sell it!) And if you’d like to share it with others, please refer them to this post where they can download the file (don’t link to the pdf itself or host it elsewhere.)

My musical journey has been an interesting one. I am not musical by nature. I enjoy music and even taught myself how to lead music. I took piano lessons, violin lessons and trumpet lessons, but they were short-lived and I’m not accomplished at any of them. I didn’t own many CDs and I rarely went out of my way to listen to a specific song or artist. I would say that up until I met my husband, music was not a priority for me.

All that changed when I met Brent. He is passionate about music. He knows all the bands, songs, concerts and pretty much anything else there is to randomly know about music. The night he told me he loved me for the first time he couldn’t quite figure out how to bring it up. He was bringing me home from a date and we had just pulled up to my apartment. He hesitated for a moment and then he said, “I want to share this song with you.” And he put in “It’s Alright” by Boyd Tinsley. It starts, “Can I tell you all that you are to me, girl? You’re really something And I give all my love to you.” Then the chorus says, “I wanna tell you I love you; it’s alright.” My heart melted.

One last example about Brent’s passion for music. During our first year of marriage we went on several long road trips. I would be anxiously running around, doing laundry, washing dishes, packing bags and getting snacks ready. I would haul luggage out to the car. Brent, on the other hand, was always found in the middle of the living room floor with all his CD books open and CDs sprawled about as he carefully chose what he thought would best fit our road trip. At first it irritated and then angered me that he would spend so much time choosing music for our trip. But, we’ve always had very fun road trips and a lot of that is because of Brent’s attention to music.

So it was no surprise to me that Sammi loved music and rhythm from an early age. I was a little, okay, a lot rusty on my nursery rhymes and kid songs. I found the laptime program at our local library and started going. I was reminded of all the classics and learned so many new songs, too. Sammi and I have definitely bonded over sharing music together.

But that only prepared me for little Elli who is the spitting image of her father in her passion for music. At first I accepted how important music was for Brent, but with our children, I have developed my own sense of how important music is. Through songs I can relate to my children in ways that would otherwise be impossible.

We laugh, we play, we fall asleep, we travel all to the original soundtrack of our life together. We love finding new artists and listening to great musicians doing music right. But at the end of the day, Sammi asks for Mommy and Daddy to sing. “Not the car. I don’t want to hear the car. I want you!” she said one day as we were driving home late at night from a fun day at Grandma’s house. She chose us over anything else. That’s the power music can have in your relationship with your little ones.

Because I want everyone to have as fantastic a time sharing music with their little ones as we do in our home, and because I know that not every library has a laptime program to get you started, I put together my first eBook all about how to do laptime with your little ones. Laptime Songs for Mommies …and Daddies and Grandmas and Grandpas walks you through introducing music to your littlest ones on up through preschoolers. It has music, classic nursery rhymes, terrific variations, crafts and book ideas. In short, it’s the ideal way to spend 20 minutes a day in front of your computer with your baby on your lap. But it also creates opportunities to take that music with you where ever you go.

2009 was a fun, fast and fantastic year for our family. Because Babies Grow Up launched on New Year’s Day 2009. Given all that’s happened in the last year, I’ve spent some serious time reflecting on all our experiences. I’d like to share some highlights from the year as well as some of the most popular posts.

Here we are with Carol Rice

Here we are with Carol Rice

My Highlights from 2009

Amazing New Friends

operation-playtimeI met some amazing people through blogging and have developed some pretty cool friendships over the last year. As I started my blogging, I was invited to participate in Play ActivitiesOperation Playtime. Melitsa has become a close friend and encourager over the last year. We both released our first eBooks in 2009. I enjoyed reviewing Treasure Basket Play and hosting a giveaway just this month.

sassyscoopsI also enjoyed meeting many of the gals from Sassy Scoops long before they formed this amazing marketing team. Vanessa of I Never Grew Up drew me in with her Nature Days. Through her I was able to meet Jyl of Mom It Forward and subsequently get involved in local blogger events in Utah such as the Goldsmith Jewelers pearl necklace promotion and the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. Through the TSF I re-met Carol Rice and was able to be a mommy blogger for the Jonesborough Storytelling Festival in Tennessee. All that, alone, was enough to keep our year busy and exciting. But there was more.

Favorite Products

Toward the end of 2009 our product reviews have focused primarily on music for children and families. We have added some terrific music to our collection and look forward to finding more great albums to share in 2010. My favorite from 2009 isn’t actually on sale yet, but it will be in just a few weeks. It’s Bari Koral’s Rock and Roll Garden. While we were away from home over the holidays the girls had a few days of being out of sorts. I just popped this CD in and it worked like a charm every time to bring my girls back into good spirits.

Another favorite of the year was Wow! Wow! Wubzy! Pirate Treasure. Even Brent enjoys listening to this when driving the car. Elli has just started trying to say Wow! Wow! Wubzy! and it’s too cute! We also love our Band in a Box from Melissa and Doug and use the instruments weekly as we make our own music.

My Favorite Posts

I was so sad to hear that Reading Rainbow was taken off the air and then further saddened by the reasoning behind the decision. I already described my feelings and elaborated on the overlooked need Reading Rainbow filled in creating lifetime readers.

I was fascinated by the benefits of rocking I learned from a child development professor at BYU. This post is one of my favorites because it shows just how perfect mothers are for their children.

While Brent was away at Officer Training for the Air Force, I wrote this post containing my thoughts on love. Fulling loving another person, spouse, child, parent or friend, entails a bit of hurt along with a wealth of joy.

I have been rather sporadic at posting this month, but I have a good reason! I took a challenge to create a product for release the first week of December. I have been throwing around an idea about how to combine a familiar tune with a collection of variations in nursery rhymes. It’s in its final stages of tweaking and revision and I’m excited to announce it will be available Wednesday! Here’s a sneak peek at the cover, designed of course by my talented husband:

Laptime Songs for MommiesHere’s a sneak peek at the way the music and words can work together. I’m A Little Teapot is one of six songs included in the book. I’m a Little Snowflake is one of over 50 rhymes included in the book. Click play and then sing the new words to a familiar tune. Enjoy!

Little-Teapot-short.mp3

I’m a Little Snowflake

I’m a little snowflake, look at me
No other snowflake is just like me.
I’m so unique, as you can see.
And just as special as I can be!

I’m so excited about this project. Our good friend, Craig Sowby of Corner House Studio, is the mastermind behind all the music and he did a fabulous job. I hope you enjoyed the sneak peek. I look forward to sharing with you the details when the project becomes an eBook and is ready for the market.

Check back in tomorrow for another fabulous giveaway. If you’re in the mood for giveaways, check out the Artificial Christmas tree sweepstakes at Balsam Hill .
