I love the new year. Actually I just love new beginnings. I’ve moved a lot in my life and I love getting to know a new place and new people. A new year is like that for me. Discovering new possibilities and embarking on new adventures.
Instead of new year’s resolutions this year, I made a vision board. I decided to focus my year, and thus my vision, around the word CREATE. I feel like we do a lot of creating already, but I want to take that love of creating into areas of my life I usually try to avoid going *cough* housework *cough*.
One area of focus will be on fostering creativity in children. I became intrigued by the idea of creativity in college. I did a project for a class about creativity in children. I was inspired when I learned there are two types of creativity: divergent and convergent. Divergent creativity is what we typically associate with creativity. This is thinking outside the box, or coming up with new ideas from a given set of information. Convergent creativity is looking at a wealth of information, making new connections within that information and creating solutions.
I tend to the more analytical, convergent side of problem solving and I loved the aha! moment when I realized that could be creative, too. I think that experience helped prepare me for having children who are so drawn to creative experiences. They all love art, music, and imaginative play. It’s only been in my adulthood that I have felt connected and capable when it comes to these creative outlets.
What are you looking forward to in 2013?
